Dear AOKGD,
This may seem an abstract pondering, but perhaps those who monitor this group might be interested in sharing ideas on the underlying motivations and ultimate goals of the initiatory process.
Allow me to throw forth some notions. First, let's suppose there are two primary manifestations of 'initiation': 1) a dramatic and potentially educational enactment performed alone or in groups that may or may not lead to 2) an inner realization of the nature of certain aspects of the individual and their relationships to a larger context. The latter may arise spontaneously, in conjuction with enactment, or in most cases, not at all. The underlying motivations for the first manifestation may be sought in traditional psychology, ie

your arguments to their main points. of the problems with definitions is that they can be limiting. the nature of certain aspects of the individual and their relationships to a larger context. ' Nor is initiation limited to being 'summarized as greater knowledge, perception and volitions in and of the fields of internal and external space and time.' or 'raise the individual' to some eventual 'celestial bureaucracy.' begin.' A true initiation (in the classical, G.D. sense), focuses a flow of energy (of some sort) into the initiate. This breaks through barriers. The result is that it now becomes easier (or, perhaps, even possible) for that person to move on in his/her personal, spiritual development. Whether or not he/she actually does the further work to advance is up to the individual. people do this. Others cannot and need the help of being linked to an initiatory current. ability to do more work.
