I am also very interested in its historical existence. Unfortunately I have little information to offer other than what little has been made available on the web. The most compelling information I have seen about it is at

- basically contending that the Necronomicon was written in the 8th century and not by H.P. Lovecraft but that no legitimate copies are currently in circulation.

Unfortunately, the author of this document, Colin Low, has admitted that it is a hoax.

As I recall, there was a well developed thread on this topic that included a detailed description of the source, precedents, and history related to this construction of Lovecraft's. Perhaps a search of dejanews would uncover it. I was impressed by the comprehensiveness of the research.
