The goal of the Great Work is to realise truth.

The essence of the Great Work is awareness.

The process of the Great Work is enquiry.

In the Great Work

I think the 'mistake' is in assuming that the Great Work can be 'accomplished.' I see the GW as a process which can be described as alchemy: raising the make-up of the essence of human & humanity from its current state to a higher, more exalted state. But by the time you achieve that state, you realize that there is an even more spiritualized state that can be achieved. This goes on forever.

It is mirrored in the 5=6 initiation ritual where you learn that you will be going through the same degrees (hence, Neophyte Adeptus Minor, Theoricus Adeptus Minor, Practicus Adeptus Minor & Philosophus Adeptus Minor) but on a different level.

I think an enlightened person would realize just how unenlightened he/she is.

Based on what do you draw these conclusions? IMO, there seems to be more evidence that Crowley did than that Mathers did.
